ABOUT OUR CRITIQUE GROUPS

PhotoPhlo’s online critique groups are instructor-led, student-driven discussions about the class's photographic work. Most of our critique groups are appropriate for photographers exploring a broad range of photographic practices and ideas, while others are thematic, focused on more specific ideas or genres. Some instructors may supplement the critiques with brief slideshows and exercises related to thinking about and understanding photographs. Critique groups are limited to 12 students or less.

GROUP CRITIQUE LEVELS

Introductory

Introductory classes are meant for photography enthusiasts who have little to no experience in a critique group. These courses will not only help students create better photos, but will introduce them to the idea of how their photographs can come together as a body of work. Classes often include brief slideshows and exercises to guide students in looking at and talking about photographs. If you are new to the critique format, taking a couple of Introductory classes before enrolling in an Intermediate class may optimize your experience, empowering you to move forward with confidence and intention.

INTERMEDIATE

Intermediate classes are designed for photographers who have some experience in a critique environment and have completed one or more portfolios of work. These critiques are great for serious photographers who will benefit from the structure and feedback a critique has to offer, whether making new work or developing a body of work already underway. Students should have reasonable confidence and proficiency in camera and post-production techniques and in discussing photos. Students should also have an understanding of how photographs can work together in a defined project.

ADVANCED

Advanced classes are meant for experienced photographers who have an ongoing creative practice, have completed several portfolios of work, and have previously been a participant in critique groups. Photographers in advanced critique groups should be thinking about their work conceptually and have confidence in responding to other artists’ work. Students should also have a foundation in the history of photography and art, in general, and be able to think about their own and other’s work within this context. Some advanced critique groups are available by application only.

HOW IT WORKS

Once you are enrolled in a critique group, you will receive a link for a password-protected webpage with instructions for how to prepare for class, including a Zoom link and details on formatting and uploading your photos.

While every teacher has a different methodology, all critique groups will consist primarily of open discussion of each student’s work. Some instructors may supplement the critiques with slideshows and exercises related to thinking about and understanding photographs.

You will have the opportunity to share your work with the group at least every other class session, depending on the structure of the critique. Everyone in the group will present their work the same number of times during the course.
