ALAN RAPP

Photobook publishing offers an exciting path for photographers, but the process can feel opaque, especially for newcomers. My teaching helps artists navigate this by exploring publishing options, shaping projects for book form, crafting proposals, and developing marketing strategies. With experience as an in-house editorial director and independent packager, I aim to demystify the process and foster collaboration, guiding photographers to realize their vision and bring their projects to life.

ALAN RAPP

With more than twenty-five years of experience as an editor, creative director, and book packager, Alan Rapp runs a book services consultancy, collaborating with photographers, artists, and designers to create books and special projects. He has worked with artists such as Bill Armstrong, Cig Harvey, Elinor Carucci, Jona Frank, David Maisel, Eirik Johnson, Pamela Littky, and the late Jim Marshall to bring their work to book publication. Through panels, lectures, workshops, and portfolio reviews, Alan helps inform photographers about the conventions of photography books and their market. He is the former editorial director of Monacelli, a division of Phaidon, and has contributed to AUGUST, The Photobook Review, and Modern Painters, among other publications.

Alan is available for consultations on the creative and practical aspects of photobook making: including concept development, editing and sequencing, crafting successful proposals, design direction, exploring the different publishing options, and planning effective marketing and promotion strategies.
