ABOUT THE CLASS

Are you stuck with your work? Are you looking to generate new ideas that might develop into a long-term project? As photographers, we often gravitate towards certain subject matter and a specific way of making pictures. When you are out shooting in the same manner for a while, it can be challenging to step out of your comfort zone or even think of something new to say with your photographs. This is the time to shake things up!

This online assignment-based workshop features fun creative challenges that will have you thinking outside the box and improving your image-making skills. We will also discuss topics including why it’s important to take bad photographs, how to embrace happy accidents, and how to go beyond a default mode of image-making.

Before the first session, students will watch Lars Von Trier's film “The Five Obstructions,” in which he gives the filmmaker Jørgen Leth the challenge of remaking one of his films five different ways, each with a different “obstruction,” or limitation.  Using this concept as a starting point, students will re-make an image from their portfolio in a new way each week based on an obstruction given in class.

If you’re looking to open up new creative possibilities in your photography and are willing to push your photographic boundaries, this is the perfect class for you.

Highlights

     • Shooting assignments covering different photographic practices.

     • Weekly critique of student work with Corinne and the group offering feedback.

     • Slideshows of historical and contemporary photographers working in different genres

     • Readings and discussions relevant to each week’s topics.

Who should take this workshop

Intermediate and advanced photographers who are looking to expand their practice and get outside their comfort zone. Interested photographers should also be comfortable using their camera and doing basic edits to their photos.

COURSE NOTE

Experiments in Photography I and II have different assignments and readings and do not have to be taken in sequential order.
